Your Road Map to our Tutorials

To meet employer’s lawful Work Health and Safety obligations LaneWorkSafe has specifically written two Alcohol and other Drug(s) tutorials.

Alcohol is a legal drug, so are over-the-counter and prescription medications. However, when their use is abused it can cause serious ramifications to any workplace; as does the use of illegal narcotics.

Both LaneWorkSafe tutorials are written in plain English and have been prepared by industry and health experts.

The most in-depth tutorial has been written for Managers and Supervisors, explaining and empowering them on how to deal with workplace impairment issues.

The secondary tutorial is for all other employees, new inductees and contractors.

Purpose

Both tutorials clearly explain to employees their employer’s Drug and Alcohol Policy and what that means in the workplace.

There is a responsibility at Law for all members of staff to undertake education in WHS risk reduction and management initiatives taken to reduce workplace risk. No one wishes to see an accident or death occur in the workplace.

For Managers and Supervisors a specifically written tutorial clearly explains how issues of impairment can be legally addressed and resolved. This includes the operation of; and, the procedure to be followed when conducting a workplace alcohol test using a breath analyser.

Objective

By undertaking either of the tutorials all employees receive in-depth education on how the use of drugs can affect their work performance. Impairment from drug abuse can lead to serious accident, or even death. It can also lead to a dysfunctional workplace. The objective of each tutorial is to heighten employee awareness and decrease the possibility of injury or death.

By Managers and Supervisors having the knowledge in how to identify and deal with employees at risk from substance abuse inappropriate situations can be avoided.

In the past many Managers and Supervisors simply have not had the training or the tools to address difficult questions, such as:

  • What do I do if I think an employee is affected by drugs?
  • What is a third party tells me a fellow employee is using drugs?
  • What do I do if I find narcotics on the premises?
  • How do I identify narcotic users?
  • How do I handle the awkward situation?

The tutorial written for Managers and Supervisors answer all of these questions and much more.

LaneWorkSafe provides a systematic framework to correctly identify and resolve workplace substance abuse issues. This successful education program helps eliminate difficult situations when impairment may be deemed a workplace safety issue.

Course Overview

Tutorial One has been specifically written for managers, supervisors and line managers.

The twenty five minute tutorial covers subjects such as:

  • legal responsibilities under WHS legislation
  • what is Fit for Work?
  • what steps do I take if I believe, or I am told an employee is under the influence of a legal or illegal drug?
  • how does a breath analyser work?
  • why a workplace Alcohol & other Drugs (AOD) policy is so important
  • general, in-depth information on alcohol and other legal drugs
  • your possible requirement to undertake a Alcohol & or other Drugs test whilst in the workplace
  • in-depth information regarding illegal drugs

Throughout the tutorial a series of related questions are asked. To successfully continue through to the conclusion of the tutorial the candidate must correctly answer each true or false question.

At the conclusion of the tutorial the candidate may print off a certificate of completion to be included in their personnel file.

Tutorial Two is specifically written for all other employees, inductees, visitors and contractors and takes about twenty minutes to complete.

Subjects covered include:

  • legal responsibilities under WHS legislation
  • how does a breath analyser work
  • why workplace Alcohol & other Drugs (AOD) policy is so important
  • general, in-depth information on alcohol and other legal drugs
  • your possible requirement to undertake an Alcohol & or other Drugs test
  • in-depth information regarding illegal drugs

Throughout the tutorial a series of related questions are asked. To successfully continue through to the conclusion of the tutorial the candidate must correctly answer each true or false question.

At the conclusion of the tutorial the candidate may print off a certificate of completion to be included in their personnel file.

Conclusion

On completing either of the specifically written Alcohol and other Drug(s) tutorials all employees, contactors or visitors will have gained specific knowledge concerning this most important workplace issue. As a result of this acquired knowledge employees can recognise and manage and action their responsibility towards a safer workplace environment.

By introducing a AOD Policy and associated education program the responsible employer has lawfully met a stated responsibility under Work Health and Safety law in providing employees with a wealth of information and knowledge on the issues surrounding the use or abuse of legal and illegal drugs; and, the stated company mission of eliminating risk taking which can lead to injury or death can be achieved.
